Lost at sea: The search for consensus, solutions
Despite the dozens of solutions proposed over the years, the stakeholders of the Salton Sea lack the one thing needed to fix the 365-square-mile sump: consensus. The Salton Sea Stakeholders' Symposium being held on Thursday at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells is intended to fill that missing piece before the sea continues to recede, exposing the seabed to prevailing winds that will carry toxic dust over carrot farms, golf courses, resorts and homes and pose a threat to our health and our economy.

Local leaders renew call to fix Salton Sea ASAP
“The time to fix the sea is now — we can't look the other way any longer,” said Fred Bell, chief operating officer of Noble & Co., a Palm Desert real estate development firm leading a push into renewable energy. Bell is also vice president of the Valley Action Group, a coalition of business leaders in the Coachella and Imperial valleys concerned about the sea's future and its potential impact on the region.

Candidates in the 37th Senate special primary answer questions on the Salton Sea
Just a few years ago, everyone was discussing the potential of the Salton Sea. Now those restoration efforts appear stalled. Do you agree with the state's plan and what should be done to get revitalization on track?

Major Salton Sea Summit scheduled
The Symposium is still being organized. It is scheduled for May 27 at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in Indian Wells. It will focus on solutions to save the dying inland lake. High levels of salt have been destroying for several years.

Imperial Irrigation District approves first phase of renewable energy transmission line
The Imperial Irrigation District is preparing the electrical grid for the arrival of more renewable energy plants with new transmission lines that will span parts of the Valley. The first phase of the Midway-Bannister line will stretch eight miles east to west near the Salton Sea’s southeastern shores.

Quantification Settlement Agreement formally invalidated
The Imperial Irrigation District anticipated Judge Roland Candee’s final judgment that invalidates the nation’s largest agricultural-to-urban water transfer, and IID is already appealing.

Desalination reconsidered as way to quench water needs
Once a pipe dream, using the Pacific Ocean to help solve the parched west's water needs is becoming a more real possibility by the day.

New River cleansing key to Salton Sea restoration
It's widely considered one of the most polluted waterways in North America, clogged with garbage, human sewage and agricultural waste. It's so filthy that signs warn residents not to get near the water or surrounding soil.

Save the Salton Sea before it's too late
According to Riverside County Supervisor Marion Ashley, who chairs the Salton Sea Authority, every year another 600 to 700 acres of sea floor is exposed. As the water level shrinks, the more salty the sea becomes. It will be harder for fish to live, taking away the food supply for tens of thousands of wild birds.
